BUILDINGS NAMED AFTER CAZZIE’S WHO’VE MADE CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE COMMUNITY

The Andrew N. Liveris Building at the University of Queensland was named after Andrew Liveris AO, who made a significant contribution to establish the Andrew N. Liveris Academy for Innovation and Leadership which is housed in the building.

Georgios Mavros (Kastellorizo) (1909-1995)
Georgios Mavros was not part of the diaspora, however, he was a lawyer and politician who is credited with saving Castellorizo from being given to Turkey in 1964. He was a Lecturer in Law, University of Athens from 1937-1942 and became a politician following the liberation of Greece from the Axis Occupation. He served in several ministerial posts including Justice Minister, Minister for National Education; Commerce and Industry; Finance; National Defence; Government Coordination; Foreign Affairs and was the Deputy Prime Minister of Greece under Prime Minister Konstantinos Karamanlis in the 1974 national unity government following the restoration of democracy. During the occupation he helped rescue Jews from the Holocaust and in 1994 he was awarded the title of Righteous Among the Nations by Yad Vashem. Georgios Mavros was also governor of the National Bank of Greece and in 1966 established the National Bank of Greece Cultural Foundation (MIET).
